Day-Dreamer's Diary

Bada Aadmi is a popular slang in India for successful person. Every parents want their children to be a “Bada Aadmi”. When children get good grades in school or win some trophy, neighbours and family members start speculating “Ye bada aadmi banega” ( He is going to be a really successful ). In India, for us success if not a luxury, it is often mandatory. Its the way of life. Its what we live for.

When asked in school “What do you want be in your life ?” The common answer is “Astraunat, Prime Minister etc etc” They hardly say “Painter or Artist” We have a peculiar image of what we call “Bada Aadmi”, based on many socio-economic parameters.

Very few of them actually get good grades and get into good academic institute because that only can enlighten your path to become a “Bada Aadmi”. However, this preaching since early childhood leaves us in a great dillema in our mid 20’s. That’s the time when we had taken a step into adulthood by becoming a “Aadmi” and stilll struggling in our life to add that adjective “Bada”. The belief of becoming a “Bada Aadmi” has deeepened in our thoughts that often lead to daydreaming. Although no body has done survey on the same, but I am sure the largest number of victims of bipolar disorder can be found in India.

Many of these people do not accept this very fact in public, but deep down they believe that they are going to do something big in their life.

I am not sure if Newton, JK Rowling, Barack Obama or Steve Jobs ever thought like this in their mid 20’s, but I guess they always had this intution. Living with this thought is sometime amazing, it gives you a great propulsion. However, when things doesn’t turn around according to your dream, it leaves us deep negative impact hampering self-confidence, self-reliance as well.

So what’s the agenda here,

Well, I am trying to figure our a recipe for success. Sounds crazy? Huh ?

All my life I heard they saying “There is no shortcut for success”. “Hard work, dedication, passion etc are the keys to success” Well, First of all, I am not trying to find any shourtcut for success. I am trying to figure out if there is any methodology for success. If any such methodology exists, is there any way to predict that based on the set of controllable parameters. So here is my hypothesis.

Suppose, if we get “all possible data” in the world. Data of all events in the history of the world, complete log of human behaviour, complete understanding of human mind, a complete understanding of every tiny thing in the world. And now, we have a super-duper computer to analyze that data. We identify all points which we define as success. All preceding events, human psychology, human behaviour, everything. We identify those patters, and based on the analysis of these patterns, we are able to generate a formula of success. The only logical question asked should be, if it is actually theoritically possible to derive some generic formula for “success” based on these patterns. If answer to this particular problem is yes, than here we are, we have cracked the formula for success.

It looks life Sci-Fi movie trailer, but if you look deeply into this hypothesis it has logical consisteny.

So question is, instead of waiting for another thousand year to discover that formula is there any scientic or logical approach which can lead us to “Success Formula”.

I do not hate hardwork. I have worked for days and months when required. Neither I have less respect for passion or dedication. I admire all those people who have reached to their goals by this or probably right now on their way. Just that, I never find myself too much passionate about something. Neither I want to make myself work for many hours.

All I want is “daydreaming” ūüôā

Lets do a thought experiment,

A robot who has all capabilities like humans e.g. walking, jumping, speaking, thinking ¬†etc. Also, this robot has all needs like human e.g. food, sex etc. Now, lets assume for a moment he doesn’t have any ‘information’ or ‘knowledge’ in his mind.

Now, suppose this guy sees a guy eating food. He doesn’t understand what he is doing. His ‘curiosity’ made him to seek an ‘answer’ to that puzzle. He has only two sources of information – Either he asks other people who are living here much before him ( seek external knowledge ) or he can seek answer to the question by ‘thinking’ ( seeking internal knowledge ) Internal knowledge is difficult to achieve. The very basic nature of humans. The easier path would be to seek the knowledge from outside. ¬†Probably the conversation would go like this ?

“What is he doing ?” – Robot asked.

“He is eating.” Human answered.

“Eating ? what is that ?” Robot has put himself in an infinite loop of questions now.

Guy explains the concept of eating and also explains why it is necessary.

The robot who just landed on the earth has forced too much information in short time. He come to know about the concept of eating, concept of needs, concept of death. However, the knowledge opens to the gate to infinite more questions. He suddenly start looking at a great ocean in front of him, full of knowledge. He keep travelling through the sea to catch the shore, but all he can see his just a horizon. A source of light, the sun meeting horizon.

During the process of seeking knowledge the robot also kept building perception – the linkage between two facts. Or in a simplistic way – the reason. The guy A is eating. The guy A will die. Two facts. If guy A doesn’t eat, he will surely die. The perception. Probably the reality. The problem arises when you do not have enough data points to link two information that results in weak linkage.

The guy A is eating. Eating is fun. Two facts. The guy A is eating to have fun. The perception.  Different perception. Different linkage.

What is the source of information so far ? An outsider.

This is just one level of perception building. Imagine linking a third fact linked to that.

Robot is hungry. The guy has already explained him concept of ‘hunger’ very well. He has also acquired the ‘knowledge’ on how tolessen the ‘pain’ of ‘hunger’. However, information gathered so are is not sufficient enough for him to know how to acquire ‘food’.

The guy explains him concept of money and how it can be acquired. He understand the concept of ‘work’.

Now, he can related concept of work, food and fun or work, food and death. He then related concept of work and fun or work and death. The work can be a means to survival or a means to have fun. This correlation as well can be acquired through external knowledge.

Now imagine such infinite facts and information linked to each other. Building perception after perception. And ultimately building a perception toward living life.  These perceptions build personalities, achievements, characters and everything.

However, imagine a second scenario, the robot lands on planet earth. Same scene, he sees a guy eating food. Now, instead of seeking knowledge of the same from outside, he explores his innerself. Its painful. Requires too much effort. Exhaustion. Pain. Seamless pain. However it ends after a while. He acquired the knowledge. In the same way, instead of building perceptions, he just keep gathering facts. He finds answers, not in the form of perception. But just in the form of another few facts.

How would that be ? How would that robot behave ? What will be his journey like ?

I suppose at any point of time in his life he will have enormous amount of data Рtotally uninterpreted. To perform any task, independent of its difficulty level, remarkableness Рall he need is to analyze the data and see the possibility of achieving it. If its possible, given enough reasons to actually perform that task, he will be able to do it.

I am not sure if this state should be more desirable. It might be risky too. There is no proof if the answers explored from inner-self will be ‘better’ or ‘worse’. But I am sure it will be a totally different experience. ¬†The world will appear totally different. The world will have different colors. Only those things will be performed that ‘matters’.

As you spend time in this world, there are few things that you learn by experience. But the ‘cost of experience’ is really high. The another alternative yet¬†complementary¬†way of learning would be take knowledge from who have already done what you are doing. Listen to him very carefully. ¬†Make it a ‘rule’. Remember it each and every time and apply in your life.

I believe rules described here are mandatory for all entrepreneurs with no exceptions at all. Most of them can be easily derived from common sense. However, one should appreciate the gravity and importance of these rules. Some people are so expert in practicing these rules that it has eventually become their habits.

Rule¬†#¬†Don’t be lethargic. Being lethargic is one of the worst thing that can happen to an Entrepreneur.¬†

Does it happen to you that few things are not done not because you were not capable or you did not put any efforts. They were messed up because you didn’t take any timely action Timely action is the essential to make your start-up as well as yourself stress free. You will be able to think with open mind when it is not blocked with stress. The decision making should be done only in this particular state of mind. No need to do things early, just make sure it do it on right time. Take the action, difficult it might be, but take the call.

You have a meeting on Tuesday and you know that you are not you might need at least a dozen hour to make that pitch. Think thoroughly, consider all the options. Take the action a week before. Start with something small and keep improvising it. But again, take a timely decision. Working overnight over weekend won’t get you good result. However, I am not against this model of working but it should not be done when mission is critical. If you are working on your idea with no deadline imposed, Probably working late nights continuously would be a good idea. But in this case its not.

Remember this rule. Write it on your arm, make a cheat sheet, make a wallpaper on your blackberry Рdo whatever you want to, to keep it in your memory.  But not following this is not an option.

I sometimes wonder if there were some base rules in the management as well like there is in science. You can solve most complex mechanical problem using Newton’s threes laws of mention. Well, I guess if given some deep thought I believe there are such basic rules in the management as well.

It might seem as obvious as Newton’s first law of motion, but you have to abide this rule in order to build a good team which can pull your organization.

Yeah, as simple as that.

Probably I might have to replace few of my team members in order to abide this rule, but that’s the call I will have to take. Although, it might be difficult to judge this based on a simple half an hour personal interview. But any how, you have to full fill this criteria.

Why do we so many so many street smart entrepreneurs who made millions without any formal education. Why even the best MBA schools of the world could not formalize these lessons learnt by these entrepreneurs.
Well, probably they did. Probably this is exactly what they teach in their well known entrepreneurship courses, but you can learn swimming by reading books. The best way to learn swimming is to take a dive into the pool. Books might help you with tricks which could help you in learning it quickly. But overall, holding your breath, getting your lungs filled with water, you sneeze for many days, you find yourself dumb as your nose and eatrs are filled with water, but in a matter of few days, everything is passed with nothing left but the joy of swimming.

These are just essential part of the learning. You fall, you make mistakes, you screw yourself over and over and you learn from each and every mistake, that is the only path to success.

A man who did not make mistakes probably didn’t put enough efforts.

Things are bit difficult on my side these days but this motivation is keeping me alive. Few more months and I will bring things on track.

As they say you should learn from your mistakes. Does it also mean that you need to make mistake to learn ? How exactly does that work ?

Lessons of life are not taught in school. How to choose your life partner ? Answer to these kind of questions can not be found in academic curiculam ( unless you have done a PhD or masters in psychology ). They can be learnt from your experience only. So does that mean you should marry at least once, learn from your mistake so that you make a right choice next time ? But damm you life, it gives you once chance. That’s it.

What should one do in that case ? Consult with someone who has already done that. Meet at least few of them. Gather the opinions, methodology, experience. ¬†Put your set of life philosophy into the equation, you will find the answer. That’s why in Indian tradition, we take suggestion from the old ones in case there is any trouble in the family.

Same is the true with startup world. You might be damm good at technology, but again you should accept the facts about things you have no idea about. That’s exactly why concept of Mentors came into picture. You should have mentor. If not one, find people for different field. Your uncle might be good at hiring – consult with him for your next hiring batch. Your dad might be good with numbers – consult with him regarding your books.

But essence is, find some one you can run to – when your ass is on fire.
